San Francsico Comedy Competition!

I am so happy and honored to be a part of the San Francisco Comedy Competition this year! This is one of the biggest festivals/competitions in the US, Robbin Williams came in 2nd place in 1976, then you have Dana Carvey, Dan Cook and many more super comics. http://sanfranciscocomedycompetition.com/

The competition starts with 2 weeks of prelims, with 16 comics each week, then the top 5 comics advance each week. So the top 10 of 32. It was already cool enough to make be just one of the 32 comedians, they take more than 500 submissions every year! Each week there are 5 shows in 5 different venues and cities around SF. Then you move on for another week of semis, then the top 5 moves on to the final week of finals.

Im in week2 and all 16 of the comics are great. All of them are national touring comics, some of them has some serious credits, like Kevin Shea. I carpooled up to the bay with my friend AJ Finney, a comic from Kansas City. Super cool dude. First night, the shows kicked off in Sonoma State Universtiy, 600 people crowd. I really thought I had a great set, but I didn't place top 5 that night. It is tough to judge your sets sometimes in these competitions. Because even if the crowds love you, there are 3 judges in the crowd that accounts for 100% of the voting! These judges can be a school faculty, a club booker or a comic. They judge you based on delivery, material, technique, crowd response, blah blah. So that was my first night, kind of bummed! Although AJ did place 4th that night. Then controversy! Mike Stanley was annouced to have placed 1st, then when the official results came out the next morning, Mike is ranked 3rd and Stroy Moyd moved up to #1! Apparently they made a mistake counting the votes initially. Man, must have sucked for Mike, but whatever, I didn't even place that night. So screw everyone.

Other than gas, the most major expense was the hotels. Lucky AJ and I split all of that. The first night we stayed at a sweet Good Nite Inn. All the comics were all super nice to each other and we were all down for some partying and hang out. It was great. I spent some of that night hanging out, and went back on the drawing board to arrange a new set for tomorrow.

Night 2, we were at the Black Oak Casino. It was just like the boulevard of broken dreams when you walk by the slot players. I was really looking forward to play some poker and take some money from the locals, but they didn't even have real poker! The poker tables were made out of 10 touch screens so they can save money in hiring a dealer! I was disappointed. The room wasn't bad, although the crowd wasn't as good as Sonoma State. With this mediocre crowd, it really showed the difference between the sets. Everybody did great the first night, but some people really didn't have a good time the second night. I was pretty stressed because if I didn't place that night, I would have had a melt down. I changed up my set to a more witty approach. I had a great spot and good set, ended up getting second. Don Frost got first, and this dude is hilarious. He doesn't have to do anything and he can get you dying laughing.

Young Men of Comedy

I am honored to be picked as part of the Young Men of Comedy clique! It is a comedy tour started by Young Angels of America, a non-profit to bring comedy to highschools and encourage kids to cultivate their talent. I was doing my comedy time set at the ice house and brook, the executive director approached me to join the tour. Love it! I can feel this is something big. We have some great comics and a great team of publicists, agent and executives.

We just had our first show last night at the Ice House: Young Men of Comedy "Incarcerate This".

Our host was Reggie Brown (the most well known obama impersonator). The show featured myself, Martin Rizo, Flaco Martinez and Kenji Thomas. Great edgy, hilarious group. Show went great! We got press on the Pasadena Star newspaper as well as LA weekly! This is just the tip of the Iceberg. We are going to take this on tour this year and take over the scene! We r also going to have the super talented Zoltan and Jerrod Carmichael join forces with us in the upcoming shows. Excited about this!

Storage Hunters

My good friend Sean Kelly recently have his TV Show picked up by TruTV and is now airing every Tuesday! It's called Storage Hunters. I was sooooo stoked to see it on TV. It's like in Good Fellas when Hank said "Tommy getting made, it's like of of us in getting made." And you can actually see alot of our circle of comedian friends in the background of the 1st episode, including myself! Haha, I was pretty excited to see myself on TV for a few seconds, it's the first time and there should be a lot more to come. The show got so much attention it was mentioned on The Soup with Joel Mchale!

I just shot a few lines for CBS's "Excused" and I just taped Comedytime.tv, hopefully we'll see that somewhere on TV also. Sean, my friends and I are working to get this new reality show off the ground. Real excited about that because I am going to be a major character in it! Hopefully this is "big things poppin, little things stopping!"

I was digging through my dads house today and I found one of my favorite childhood toys! Tamagotchi! The virtual pet thingy from japan. I remember I waited in line to get this bak in Hong Kong. Just to see my beloved digital pet die becuz I didn't clean up his poo a week later. Good times

Stupid Contests...

Comedy competition sucks. I was recently just in the Finals of LA's funniest comedian contest and now I want to punch someone in the face! Dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong or corrupted about the contest, in fact it was a great networking tool and good stage time. It is started by comedian Dante and he puts together some very cool judges that can actually take you places. Good deal there. But here's my story.

So there are 11 contestants in the finals. It was a packed house at the Lovitz club in Burbank. We're each only given 4 minutes of time. So there I go, jumboed up some of my most solid materials into a 4 minute set. I rocked the house sooooooo hard (sorry if I sound blowhardy) the audience loved me! But here's the catch, the audience isn't the one putting in the votes, the 20 judges have 100% of the votes. At the end of the night, it came to annoucing the top 3 finishers. They announced #3 and #2, and here I was standing there preparing my acceptance speech....then the host announced "And in first place..." As several of the audience members yelled out "Jimmy Ouyang!" The host continued "the winner of the LA's funniest comedian contest! D.C. Ervin!" I almost pulled a Kanye West on that stage. Not to take anythiing away from the super funny DC, but WTF!!! I should have won that contest by a mile!! I destroyed the house!!! In my very confused state I talked to one of the judges and he candidly told me "dude you were funny, but you only did racial material, that's too easy...." and I also followed another asian comedian, so I guess that was some kind of Asian Tsunami overload for the judges. I respect the judges very much but if you were there, you would be shocked that I didnt even place!

I just needed to vent. I know I should be glad I made it to the finals, but that's like the Lakers making the playoffs, odds are pretty good, that's all Im saying. There is only one person who is not pissed off at a contest. As Nelly said in his song, "2 is not a winner and 3 nobody remembers." Contests can suck my balls.

It's funny, when a white person is crazy, we say they're bipolar, schizo, etc. "It's a real medical condition, I feel bad for him" But when a minority goes crazy, that person is just a nut job and a pariah to society, nobody really feels bad. Kind of the same thing with the whole A.D.D. thing.

Goaltending!!!!!!!!

I've been a Clippers fan now for 10 years. The only thing in these past 10 years anyone can get really excited about i Sam Cassell. And FINALLY we got Blake Griffin. Some might say Im saying this too early, but Im saying it.....FUTURE HALL OF FAMER!

Just as I thought this relationship is starting to mend itself, last night happened. In an epic (depends how you look at it) overtime battle, they lost to the worst team in sports history! the miserable Cavs who is on a 26 losing streak, the longest in any 4 major US sports!!! Really!!! Come on!!!!! And now the Clips are back on the "if you want to get it win, bank it on playing the Clips" boat. But it's not the Clips' fault. If you really watched game, the ref blew a last minute call that would have given us a win in regulation! Just watch...(Forget about the misleading title)

I know it's close but the ball was on its way down!!!! Which is the definition of a goaltending violation, meaning the shot should have counted and the Clippers would have won the game!!

I was so incredibly upset that I couldn't even cry. It was like watching your girlfriend getting raped! I know that descripetion might have been bit graphic, but to me, it wasn't. It was so upsetting that crying would have been an understatement. At this point, here is the only plead that I can make: All the record keepers out there, please put an asterisk next to this historic loosing streak stopping victory.

Planning my world domination

Came back from an amazing Bay Area Tour with The CockyAsians. The tour was on at The New Parish in Oakland and the Fat Cat in Modesto. Both awesome venues! I also did guest spots in Tommy T's, Purple Onion and other great venues during my stay there. Amazing place, the people, the food and most importantly the comedy scene is great up there. People were very down to earth and they all had a great vibe to them. Im seriously considering moving up there.

This trip really opened my eyes to a whole different world of comedy. I am now planning my country wide domination. Planning on featuring the nation and starting my own tour, please beware of this in your neighborhood soon!

At the end of the day, I am concentrated towards to finish line. Please believe that Comedy is my priority and I dont see it changing anytime soon. If you want to join the movement, holla at ya boy! If not, stand aside and wait in line for a ticket.

The Cop Out Life

Finally done with school, FOREVER!!! Ive been waiting for this ever since i started kindergarten when I was 3. School was never my thing, too many rules for my taste. Now I can do whatever the hell I want when I want! Man this feels good. Working at the comedy palace is paying my rent, doing gigs and other hustle keep my wallet from starving. I can really concentrate on my act and writing new material. My goal in the next few months is to write 20-30 minutes of new solid material. And of course I am pushing my Rush Hour Comedy shows super hard. check out this next one on April 7th. I also got a couple side projects going, building a brand new website and a sweet podcast. Stay tuned everyone!

Last Comic Standing Season 7 Audition!! (3/7/10)

Not even kidding, I was the VERY LAST PERSON that got into the audition. Literally, The Last Comic Standing. They interviewed my ears off after my audition, so hopefully i'll be getting some airtime. I camped out and almost collapsed for 2 minutes of audition. Luckily the neighborhood around the Hollywood Improv was pretty nice. Some lady living there actually came out and gave my friend a blanket. All the comics were pretty friendly and supportive at first, but then when it comes down to getting into the audition, people almost started rioting. When me and the last group of people got in people outside started going crazy, a riot almost broke out. People were chanting "I just want to be funny" "Give me stage time" in which I responded "Go to the Laugh Factory", luckily only the people in the green room heard it, the mob would have killed me for that one.

The host this season is Craigs Robinson (black dude from The Office), the judges are Greg Giraldo, Natasha Leggero and Andy. They are all pretty chill. This season I think they want to have a prop comic or a magician. Because there were alot of those people in the private auditions (they didnt have to stand in line like suckers because NBC invited them). The only comic who stood in line that I saw got through was Fat James and his goombah friend. Im not being racist, they just referred to each other as goombahs and that was the characters they were playing. Stay tuned for the show (probably showing this Summer).
